Surface Grinder Power Feed!
My surface grinder has been in need of a power feed for a long time, I'm taking it a step further an partially automating my machine.
So today I'll be making a 2 axis power feed that does not require computer control
The 3rd axis (y-axis) is easily added, but I figured it's been so long since a video that I'd upload rather than keep working on it

Tailstock Die Holder Build
Переглядів 33 тис.11 місяців тому
In this video I build a tailstock die holder for my lathe. I built a crude tailstock die holder years ago, but I sold it with my old hercus lathe. I decided it is about time that I replaced it with a newer, better version. Yes, there are plenty of simpler methods to constrain the part without slotting, I just wanted an excuse to try out the slotter! I'm still convincing myself that voice overs ...
This will fix my lathe

So... I accidentally crashed my lathe and broke a quick change tool post cam lock stud. 😬 You can't really buy these as a replacement part. How did I crash it?! I was threading a part, then had a lunch break... I came back, put the lathe in high gear for the next operation and didn't disengage the threading lever... My tool slammed into the chuck and broke the stud. I thought it was a good chan...

    Arguably a silly question, but would you mind covering how you determined the load capacity of this gantry? Is it just sheer load for the I-beam and compressive load for the A-frames? Whatever the lowest load between those two, that's what your max load for the gantry is?

    • @TomMakeHere
      @TomMakeHere 2 місяці тому

      Need to consider bending and shear of the beam, a central load causes maximum bending and at an end is max shear. Also compression in the a frames, a bit of allowance for the brace inducing bending, and the caster rating. But yes the lowest capacity component is what will limit the rated capacity. It also needs a factor of safety of course, so you aren't right on the limit

    • @williams.7314
      @williams.7314 2 місяці тому

      @@TomMakeHere This is generally calculated through the ratings based on gauge and length? I wonder if there's a pocket field guide that's "engineering for idiots".

    • @TomMakeHere
      @TomMakeHere 2 місяці тому

      @williams.7314 yeah I'm a bit hesitant to give any definite answers on capacities for fear of someone getting hurt. Iys hard because different parts of the world have different material strengths and sizes so it's a bit tricky to advise as it's a global audience 😅
